St Matthew’s School Narrogin

A Note from the School Health Nurse

Welcome to the new school year. My name is Lana Grzinic and I am the School Health Nurse who visits your school.

School Health Nurses work in schools to promote healthy development and wellbeing so students may reach their full potential. A major part of my work is focused on early intervention and the School Entry Health Assessment program. Additionally, the nurse can be contacted at any time throughout primary school if you have concerns about your child’s health, development or wellbeing.

School Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing information, assessment, health counselling and referral. They also work in partnership with schools to support teachers in health related curriculum and can assist in the development of health care plans for students with complex and chronic health needs.

The services provided are free and confidential.

Please contact me on Lana.grzinic@health.wa.gov.au or on 9881 0385 at the Southern Wheatbelt Primary Health Service, Narrogin Hospital.

St Matthew’s Year Six Leaders Out in Front After Leaders’ Day

Mark Collins

On Monday 8 February, the Year 6 class participated in a leadership day, run by Mr Mark Tenney and Mrs Colleen Quartermaine. The day originated from discussions between Mr Tenney and Mrs Quartermaine about how to best prepare the Year 6 class for their leadership duties in and around the school for the new school year. It involved listening to guest speakers, Mr Bevan George, Olympic Gold medalist and ex-Kookaburra captain for the Australian men’s hockey team; Shire President, Mr Leigh Ballard; and Mrs Natalee Johnston, an ex-Air Force pilot.

A common theme from the guest speakers was being a good role model and setting a good example for others. The students also participated in games and activities focusing on developing leadership attributes.

The leadership day was enjoyed by all the Year 6 students who gained great insight into different ways they can be leaders: showing dedication in all they do, being a good listener, having a ‘can do’ positive attitude, being organized, learning from mistakes, seeing different viewpoints in a situation, and encouraging and building confidence in others.

St Matthew’s School provides every Year 6 child a senior badge. Every child in the school should feel confident that they can approach any Year 6 child if they need help around the playground. Communications Captain, Maleah Westphal, got a lot from the day, stating, “I learnt that if I show respect towards others, I will get respect back in return.” Maleah gained great insights into how the guest speakers could show leadership attributes in such a wide range of environments.

Project Compassion

As we begin the season of Lent, we are encouraged to think of those who are less fortunate than us. Project Compassion boxes will  be sent home and families and kids are encouraged to donate to Caritas. Our combined efforts as a school help people both here in Australia and overseas in extreme poverty and support charitable programs seeking to make a difference. Please give generously.
