Socktober

It was lovely to see all the crazy socks worn by students and staff last Tuesday for Socktober . Students brought in their gold coin donation for Catholic Missions. All proceeds go to those a lot less fortunate than us.

Doing Maths Together at Home

It is important that children develop specific language skills related to maths. Sporting activities, shopping, helping at home and other activities provide rich and meaningful contexts to develop these skills. It might take a while for some children to use terminology and language effectively, but continual exposure to and use of mathematical talk is a strong support for future learning.

Some ways to incorporate mathematical language:

  • Ask your child to get the “two litre” milk carton from the fridge.
  • When cooking, name the different measures used.
  • Discuss empty and full.
  • Use positional language as you chat about their sporting activities or as you walk together. This also helps your child understand language related to spatial awareness.
  • Use recycling as an opportunity to sort items to help them understand concepts such as “same” and “different”.
